Timing Belt replacement interval is critical when it comes to proper engine maintenance. A vehicle is equipped with one of three timing set ups.
1. rubber timing belt
2. gear drive
3. timing chain
Generally, The only one that routinely needs maintenance is the timing belt. A timing belt is a rubber belt with teeth that keep the engines camshaft(s) and crankshaft in time. When this belt gets stressed or tired from old age, contamination or fatigue it will no longer keep the engine in time causing problems. The problems are
1. poor fuel economy
2. Check engine light
3. The vehicle will not start
4. poor engine performance
5. engine valve damage
When considering performing maintenance on a timing belt you should make sure to have the water pump, timing belt tensioner, idler pulley and any leaking seals replaced. This is often a very expensive repair but very necessary. If you consider you generally only need to do it every 60k to 120k miles , the expense is minimal when spread out over the life of the vehicle. You will also want to make sure the engine coolant is refilled and the air is purged from the cooling system. If you replace your timing belt at the correct interval you will surely be safe from point a to b , the car will perform as designed and you wont have to worry about damaging your engine from lack of timing belt maintenance. This is much better than the alternative. Determining your correct timing belt interval can be done usually by reading your owners maintenance manual that came with your vehicle. You may also call the shop and ask and we will find the information for you.
